Trainning partners

Trainning partners are hard to come by. As I was updating my log on running2win tonight it occured to me that I have had some pretty kick ass trainning partners over the course of my running career.

As a little kid: my dad took me to road races and forced me to run (not the best partner, but got me into running)

In middle school: I had two-three guy who always pushed me in practice/meets

H.S.:I had six guys on my varisty team that were sub-17 min 5k guys

College: tons of studs that would eat, sleep, and drink running with me.

Post college: a wife that tolerates my continued love (obsession) with running and my son who also tolerates me taking him outside in January in the baby jogger, as well as a couple of guys in town who keep me humbled and make me take my easy days easy. (side note: Ed Jacob, one of my friends in VW turns 50 on Sunday and will be running his 50th Marathon in Tallahassee on Sunday, both very cool accomplishments)

As I continue to reflect on all of these people, Jason Maus has been my trainning partner for close to 13 years now. In the Summer of 1995 we began trainning together. It's amazaing how much impact one person can have on another persons life and not really even know it. I don't think it will be until later on in life when Jason and I both are crippled and limping around at some track meet that we will be able to truly comprehend how much of an impact we've had on each others lives. I can only hope that those of you reading are as blessed as I am to have someone who shares the same desires and trainning aspirations as you.

Technologically inept

Big words meaning: I suck with computers!

I've been trying to get a hold of Budic for like 2 weeks to help trouble shoot why I couldn't download SportsTracks for my Garmin, but he's impossible to get in touch with because he's always traveling. Not his fault he has a solid job. Regardless, I figured it out so back off. Here is my first official run in VW that I was able to save.

As one can see, Van Wert, is tiny. As a matter of fact, this map is full size. I have to run around in a tiny square for 70 min if I want to log a ten miler. Just kidding, but VW sucks and so does running around this tiny hole!

Swimming Any One?

Today was a pretty cool day, figuratively and literally, the run this morning was a cold 13 miles, got it in none-the-less, then took Myles to Parent-tot swim lessons, where the pool temp was a bit chillier than both of us would have liked.

The swim lesson went very well considering it was @ 11:30 this morning, which is his usual nap-time, eat-time, so he did great. Once he got over the frigid pool temps, via shivering, crying, and wrenching on to my neck, he loosened up and actually had a decent time. Papa-Tim, and Mama-Marcia also came to watch. Kylee sat by the side and snapped all of the candids. We go back again on Tuesday night!!!Once we got home, Myles also took it upon himself to try to shovel the driveway!

Last, but not least, big congrats to Tim Buduic (check the BW website) for running 8:46 last night in Berea. Nice Race Tim!

VO(my god) 2 MAX

Went to ONU right after school to meet up with Jason and the Dept. Head for the Exercise Phys. Dept to go over how the test would take place, I did a 1 mile warm up before heading back to the treadmill and the sadomasochistic device they use to help conduct the test. Might I add this was one of the most unique things I've been apart of. At Heidelberg we had no such equipment to even do a test like this much less the staff that was will to take time out of their day to administer it.

Regardless, I did my one mile warm up and Dr.Swanson( www.onu.edu/a+s/hpss/exercisephysiology/faculty/index.html ) had everything set up ready to go. He started out at 7mph and 1% grade, I thought that I would never max out, as we continued on, the pace picked up, my breathing started to go nuts, the incline continued to increase, and by 12 1/2 minutes I was huffin/puffin and trying not to fall off the treadmill.
Unfortunately the printer wasn't working so I will get all of my data at a later date, he told me the two most important pieces of information were the 79.8 ml/kg/min and 4.89 L/min.

Now what does this mean? I'm not going to claim to know, nor will I try to elaborate on the numbers, as a matter of fact, anyone with an exercise phys. background that cares to try to explain it to me better, it would be greatly appreciated. I've tried reading Better Training for Distance Runners by Seb Coe and Dr. David Martin, but much past Ch. 1, my exercise phys knowledge becomes a jumbled mess. I will continue to do some research in hopes to find the answers.

It was pretty cool to be a lab rat today and I look forward to going back in the Fall to get tested again to see if there are any improvements.

After the test, and a short recovery, Maus and I did 8 X 300 meters @ 10k pace with 100 jog recovery, splits were between 55-58 for 300 (75-75 pace/per/400)
Then we did a two-mile cool down.

It was good to get over to ONU and see Coach Maus again. We always have good conversation and good workouts/training runs. I'm jacked for the Twin Cities Marathon in the fall, I hope things keep going well in the mean time.

Food for thought...

Even the greatest teachers can be challenged by their students! An unruly student interrupted Gautama Buddha one day. Buddha waited quietly for the student to finish, then said, "If a man offered a gift to another but the gift was declined, to whom would the gift belong?"

"To the one who offered it," said the student.
"Then," said Buddha, "I decline to accept your abuse and request that you keep it for yourself."

On a daily basis I deal with one or two students that get on my nerves. 99% of the time I just want to tell them to sit down a shut up. I guess Buddha would handle them in an entirely different way. That's probably why people pray to Buddha and not me.

Huff 50k

The Man-dick from YSU, via Van Wert, (Justin Dickman) sent me a photo that he found on his camera from the Huff 50k. I thought that I would share it with everyone.

from left to right

Reed (aka Reedo Shockapedo) Wolverton, Jeremy (Toledo) Wysocki, myself,

Dan (no nickname) Simpson, and Justin (Man-dick) Dickman

Since December when we got together, Reed has went back to the Berg-running rather well as of late, Toledo started Grad-school @ UD and is living with his girl-friend and her parents in Dayton, I'm still in VW teaching/running/and looking forward to outdoor track, Simpson is in Georgia as a GA at some college I don't want to butcher the name of, and Dickman is @ YSU running a bunch of sub-par 3k's-I'm sure he'd agree. I look for him to run about 15 flat by the end of indoor.

ONU Friday Night Series

Since the last blog... not much has happened. I've slacked off on my blogging in 2008, something that I thought I would do a better job on, but I've yet to do so. Regardless here it goes.

Friday night, how could you picture a better Friday night. Let me paint a picture. Northwest Ohio is a balmy 13 degrees so what a better place to be then in Crap Ada Ohio at ONU for the second part of the ONU Friday Night Series.

On Tuesday I emailed Maus to see if he could get me in to a 3k, now I haven't ran a 3k for about 2 years so I didn't know what to expect, but I wanted to get in a decent hard effort without being outdoors because of the obvious OHIO crappy weather.

Kylee, Myles, Sam (Kylee's dad) and Alice (Kylee's mom) left VW about 5:30 to drive the 45 min to Ada. I got there, talked to Maus and had about an hour to warm up. Headed out solo to warm up, b/c I missed the ONU guys that were racing the 3k due to my tardiness. Got in an easy two before the race. Didn't know what to expect other than the pain of breathing in the indoor track air (the kind that makes you feel like you've smoked a pack of cig's). I had Maus enter me at 9:05 b/c I thought I could run about 9:45 for 2 mile about now, apparently I'm a "bull-shitter" according to Coach Maus because he predicted I would run faster than that. Well he is wise beyond his years because I finished up running 8:53 which is only about 4-5 seconds off of a pr (how sad!).

I led for the first 800-1000 meters before Paul Lewis took the lead, then the kid from Ashland led for a lap or two. I didn't want to be a dick and sit on these guys so with about a 1000 to go I made a move as we passed some lapped traffic and gapped the guy from AU. I was able to hold on which was good. I felt under control the entire race, I don't know whether it is because I've raced so many times that I can finesse a race, or because I'm fit. By no means do I think 8:53 is studly, but for a guy who runs marathons as a primary race I thought 8:53 with no speed-work was a pretty solid effort.

I look forward to racing a few more times during indoor, possibly another 3k later in the year (I WANT JIMMY O'BRIAN, the kid is in sick shape) so everyone can see him run a 55 last 400 in a 3k against my 70 and embarrass me! and also a 5k hopefully on an over sized track later on as well.

I'll be back over at ONU on Thursday for a VO2 Max test, courtesy of Coach Maus and the exercise phys. dept. So I look forward to finding out the results of that test too. Mauser, make sure Coach Crook knows I'm coming over!!! HA!

Secret Public Journal

In tribute to one of my favorite comedians on the Bob and Tom show, Mike Birbiglia, I thought I would do this blog entry in Diary form.

Dear Secret Public Journal,

Today, like many other days, started out with a morning run, only this time, on my morning run I proceed to ramble about my favorite Simpson's episode. You know, the one where Homer says "I have really important things to remember" he then looks at his hands and on it them it says, "Lenny White, Carl Black." In the same episode, Homer crawls into the dog house of Santas Little Helper only to find a badger that attacks him. When Homer is asked how his shirt didn't get ripped apart he exclaims "What do I look like a tailor?"

Now why am I rambling about the Simpson's, because Sunday nights episode featured probably some of the best Simpson's comedy ever when Ralph Wiggum was elected as both the Democratic and Republican nominee. It is only fitting that the Simpson's most unlikely figure, Ralph, would receive the nomination by both parties.

The Presidential election is still months away, but it is hilarious that even the Simpson's have time to make fun of how ridiculous the election process is. I typically don't have strong political views, due to my lack of interest in politics, but maybe during the next election, I will "Pick a winner, Ralph Wiggum!"

Until next time, this concludes my secret public journal.

The political views, or lack there of, expressed in this blog are not a direct reflection of the views held by the blogger, Fox TV, TGR or anyone associated with these affiliations.

Short Week

This week was a short school week with the Holidays, but it felt like it would never end. I know that most people think that teachers have it pretty good, well we do, but when the school schedule is messed up, so are the kids.

I had to work just Thursday and Friday this week, but Thurs. we had a two-hour delay due to snow/ice/etc. and with it being the first day back, the kids were bouncing off the walls. On Friday we actually had a normal day. We went from 8-3:00 like usual, and by like usual, I mean for the first time since Dec 12th or 13th. The whole last week before Christmas break, yeah, I called it Christmas break, we had delays or cancellations, so this Friday seemed like I taught for about 10 hours. I'm out of teaching shape. I've got to work on my teaching endurance, patience, and sharpen up my pedagogy (look it up if you don't know what it is)!

To finish off the week, Kylee, Myles, and I had Kylee's god-daugther (Sydney) over on Fri. night and we all went out to Applebee's in Lima (bean) Ohio. Pretty good meal. Myles fell asleep on the way home so Sydney and I went to get a movie and ice cream while Kylee put him in bed. When we came back we watched Hairspray, when I say we, I watched 20 min, got really bored, and Kylee and Syd watched the rest of it. I'm sure if I could tolerate musicals I would've like it, but lets just say I'm not that cultured.

*week one of new year=50-60 miles
*looking for Ph.D programs to apply to
*no good Ph.D programs in VW=must move eventually (suggestions)

Happy New Year

Happy 2008 to all 4 people who read this blog (Tim, Maus, Aunt Gwyn, and Dickman).

I all actuality this past year has gone by so quickly. I started blogging, albeit sporadically, back in April this year, as a way to vent and talk a little bit about nothing. I've found it as a good outlet when things aren't going so well and I really enjoy spending a few minutes updating everyone on my running and Myles (as those seem to be the underlying theme of most of my entries).

2008 resolutions:

1. Rededicate myself to running.

This sounds crazy to people who always say "you're so dedicated!" This is not the case. I ran a miserable 2744 miles in 2007, roughly 52 miles per week, down nearly 14 miles a week from 2006. Not to mention that in 2007 I ditched out of more hard workouts then the fat kid who doesn't dress for gym class!

2. Not buy beer for my house.

I'm not cheap, I just buy entirely too much beer for my house. Given the choice of Gatorade, Pepsi, or Beer I will choose a beer 4 out of 5 times. And I like Pepsi and Gatorade a lot.

3. Read "Once a Runner".

Ouch!!! I've had the book for almost 6 years and I've only read through the first 5 chapters. I think I've read the first 5 chapters about 17 times, but I never finish it. Now with "Return to Carthage" out, I definitely want to finish "Once a Runner" so that in 25 more years, I can read the sequel.

2008 will bring about another child to the Moody household so my last resolution, probably the most important one, is to be the best father that I can be. I learned from one of the bet (my dad) so as I juggle my other 3 resolutions, this will be on the forefront of my mind.

Happy New Year to all!
